Another technology we feature is the Starlux by Palomar. The technology also known as intense pulse light (IPL) continues to get better. It can be used to treatment many aesthetic problems including unwanted pigment (both red and brown), vascular lesions, and unwanted hair. Another term frequently used is photo rejuvenation. Ever wondered what a photofacial is? Spas offer facials using various materials to improve skin tone and texture. The photofacial uses IPL technology which requires the involvement of physicians. By using different wavelengths of light different skin problems can be targeted and treated. Photofacials can treat brown pigment and red vascular lesions in the same treatment. A series of up to 5 treatments may be necessary. Too aggressive of treatments cause damage to healthy skin, multiple treatments allow you to get the results you want with no down time.

We now feature the EXTREME photofacial. This differs in that we use a substance called LevulanÔ. It enhances the photofacial, gives quicker results. The actual process takes longer to do and does involve some minor downtime. Redness and peeling may occur for 1-3 days after the procedure and you can’t be in direct sunlight for 48 hours after the procedure.

LevulanÔ is a substance first developed and FDA approved for treatment of pre-cancerous skin lesions on the face known as actinic keratosis. It is now being researched and getting FDA approval for treatment of acne and photo rejuvenation. It is a painless acid applied to the skin, incubated and then activated by a light source such as IPL. Discomfort after the procedure typically is mild. Occasionally a very intense reaction occurs with more downtime and discomfort. However a more intense reaction will heal and probably result in even better and quicker results. Retinol and related products are contraindicated with usage of Levulan.Ô
